  1. It’s the waiting
    the wondering
    the worrying about
    the listening
    the distractions
    the contraptions
    of the world,
    covering up the sound
    I’ve found I’m always here
    listening for.

    Dave’s Double

I never knew I wanted you
but like with most best things
    you found me.

    We could be alone together.
    That was new.

    I remember your last day.
The girls all left town because they couldn’t handle it.
(Of course, I couldn’t, either. But sometimes that’s the gig.)
    You didn’t know different,
but I kept the windows down.

And there was the special trip to Wendy’s,
where I bought a big ol’ combo
    that I didn’t eat.
    You did.

And the windows were down again as
    we set off
    a short trip
    strip mall
    string the parking space along
    extra lap around the block
    they left us alone together
a little push they let me give

    And then silence. Stillness.
    Alone by myself.

You live now in a box moved twice from a
buffet in the dining room to a cabinet in the basement guest room.

You live other places, too, but those’re the weirder ones.
Those’re the ones I remember first.
