   Oh, forgotten youth:
   the truth is,
   no one trusted us

   to break our bones
   to skin our knees
   to shout at each other
   with obscenities,

   so now we wander
   what structures
   our parents built
   of childhood haunts –
   bored, with padded pants
   and safety nets and
   innocence never questioned

   as if the pain were something
   to be contained
