(I had this “voice” of a teacher resisting their students’ need for joy.)
We can’t do that –
it’s not in the contract.
Show me the language that says
you can wear bright clothes,
sing bright songs,
flash bright smiles,
and launch into bright dances
in this place where my endless voice is designed
to dull the senses but sharpen the mind.
If only I had more bright students,
then perhaps,
I could find joy at the oddball thinking of the back row
instead of the satisfaction I get from listening to my ideas
being tossed right back to me in the answers
on the test.
No, we can’t do that.
It’s not in the contract.
We can’t do that.
walk with me in this
cacophony of color & ridicule
walk loud so the stares are strong
up and down the patterned road
lips of red and and a sordid truth
