I am in alignment with Peter Elbow who argues that we should put writing first. Not that kids are good readers by any means but he feels that our students don’t read as well as they should because they do not write enough. The potential for writing to learn is immense.

I’m not sure about the analogy of ‘learning in a bottle’ but agree that expressing (eg speaking and writing) is an essential component of learning.

Collaborative writing is a great tool but shouldn’t replace individual, reflective writing: they both have a place.
