It’s the eyes I watch
as what has gone up,
comes down;
when gravity takes its due
so that everything remains flat
and grounded
while we all know the world is composed
of pieces that need to be fit together
and so, we rebuild.
What magic in these lowly curls
On sheets in disarray;
What fantasies the dream unfurls
In slumber’s artful way;
The folded limbs, the crumpled face,
So tender, peaceful, yet
This solitude belies the pace
The infant’s day has met.
What ventures little fingers made
That now lie limp and still;
What hurt did little hands evade
By Mother’s gentle will?
The coppered skin, the dappled chin,
The wounds of this child’s play
Shall vanish in the morning thin
To apprise the child’s new day.

Lois
You are a creator
and destroyer.
Brave warrior,
these up and down blocks
are harbingers, heralds
of the bridges
you will build under fire,
the walls
you will demolish in harm’s way,
the realm of love
you will protect with ardent warmth.
Life on the line,
you will stand fast,
yield no quarter
and prevail.
The World is Not Flat
It’s the eyes I watch
as what has gone up,
comes down;
when gravity takes its due
so that everything remains flat
and grounded
while we all know the world is composed
of pieces that need to be fit together
and so, we rebuild.
